About me

I’m a freelance editor and creative writing tutor with fourteen years’ experience in the publishing industry. You’ll find me by the seaside in England, but I work with clients all across the world.

Until flying solo as a freelancer, I was Editorial Director at the historic imprint Chatto & Windus at Vintage, Penguin Random House. Before that, I was Editorial Director at Virago, the legendary feminist publisher. I began my career at Quercus, where I helped set up the literary imprint riverrun.

Authors I’ve worked with have won or been listed for prizes including the Authors' Club, Baillie Gifford, Bath, BBC National Short Story, Desmond Elliott, Dylan Thomas, Giller, Goldsmith's, Gordon Burn, Jhalak, Kate O'Brien, National Book Award, Orwell, PEN/Faulkner, Pulitzer, Scottish Book of the Year, Sports Book Award, William Hill and Women's Prize.

I’ve been tutoring at Faber Academy since 2019, and teach the regular course Edit & Submit Your Novel twice a year online. I also deliver classes on effective workshopping, pitching your novel and how to approach the publishing industry. At Arvon I teach fiction and non-fiction courses, with regular retreats at their centres in Devon and Shropshire.

I helped set up the inaugural Brighton Book Festival and have run workshops for the Working Class Writers’ Festival, in a women’s prison and at universities including Edinburgh and Oxford.
